The Golden Compass

The entire controversy surrounding this book makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Not only are the critics, who base their selling-atheism-to-kids-at-Christmas arguments on supposition, hysterical and inflammatory but they're also suspiciously late. Philip Pullman's book is over ten years old. Why now? The release of the $180 million dollar movie based on his book is the obvious reason but the darn book has been out there deviating young minds for a long time. Propaganda, which steers the ignorant, also serves to motivate the curious and I'm sure will enrich the ticket sales in this instance. Personally, I can't wait to see this film! I wonder if I would be so interested if not for all the media attention. This begs the question further as to WHO exactly is behind all this frenzy. I'm sure I will be standing in line with a broad spectrum of folks from the morbidly curious to the blissfully ignorant (and every shade in between the two) but the real statement is that the line is long and all of our money is the same color: golden.
